Reader Question: I Have Big Calves and I Cannot Lie

Okay, I am lying.  I do not, in fact, have big calves.  What I have are giant, feisty, often militant thighs the likes of which haven’t been seen since the Venus of Willendorf:

Isn't she lovely?

But, this isn’t about me.  New reader, Cathy (Hi, Cathy!), sent me a question the other day regarding good sources for wide-calf boots.  Now just because I don’t have wide calves, doesn’t mean I don’t have my sources.  I do.  They just happen to be my dear friends Erin, of Plus Sized Curves Ahead and Kelsey, of Charming Pumpkin.

Both of these women have self-admitted large calves.  In fact, Kelsey’s calves and my thighs frequently hold summits on how best to take over neighboring countries.  And, both of these women have successfully found and styled (rather well, I might add) wide calf boots.

So cute, right?  But, where did they get those fabulous boots?  Erin’s are Viva La Diva from Simply Be and you can read more about them here.  And Kelsey’s are Abound from Nordstrom Rack.  Kelsey also recommends the following:  Avenue Wide Calf Boots, Evans, Lane Bryant and Duo Boots.  To that list, I’d add WideWidths.com, Nordstrom and Cougar Boots.  You can see a review on Cougar Boots at 260 Days, No Repeats and also see how Iris styled her Cougars.

Booties are also a good option for women with wide calves.  Booties that come to just below the ankle bone are probably your best bet.  It allows you to maintain the shapeliness of your gorgeous legs.  If you go just above the ankle bone, compensate with a little shorter skirt – just above the knee is perfect.  And a trick I just learned today, from my gorgeous, wide-calved friend Jodee, is to buy "slouchy" boots.  The shafts of slouchy boots are usually cut more generously, so while they may not slouch on you, there is a good chance they'll fit your wider calves.

How about you folks?  Anybody have any good sources for wide calf boots that I might have missed?  Let me know in the comments!

Also, speaking of boots, did you know that the current monocle theme on Go Chic or Go Home is Boots?  Don’t know what I’m talking about?  Find out more and enter my $50.00 gift card giveaway here.  And hurry, the giveaway closes at midnight tomorrow!

Happy Saturday, All!  I hope you’re all having wonderful weekends!

  1. I've heard great things about Duo Boots for wide calves.

Now I just need a company that makes boots for tall calves. I want knee-high boots, not shin-high!

  2. I honestly have to get lucky. I have disproportionately large calves compared to the rest of my body and have TONS of trouble with boots and pants all the time. I've had to return online purchases when they arrived and did not fit my calves and many, many items have sadly been handed to fitting room attendants after failed attempts.

  3. This is a wonderful post, Gracey. My calves are calling for another summit. I've managed to beat them into submission with some deft political machinations, but I'm not sure how much longer I can keep them at bay...

  4. With the caveat that I have a lot of Duo Boots that I buy for the bigger foot (they go up to UK 10/US 12 in the long boots, and UK 9/US 11 in the short boots) and that my calf size falls *just* on the small side of medium, when scaled for my foot size) I can attest to their high quality and good fit. They go another 10-12 cm up from where I land on their calf size, they all seem to have generously stretchy gussets. Their customer service is really good, and I've only ever bought one pair of boots from them where the fit wasn't absolutely bang-on, and in that case, they erred on the side of a more generous fit, not a smaller one.

They're pretty spendy, but their post-Xmas sale last year was incredibly good; I picked up three pair for the price of about 1 1/4.

  5. Thank you, thank you, thank you for these recommendations. I don't wear boots because I have ginormous calves (THanks, DAD) and I've basically given up on trying to find a pair for myself!

  6. You're doing a real public-service with this post. Those of us with bodies that differ from the norm often have trouble finding clothes that fit. Trading info on sources is very valuable. Perhaps you can expand this idea to other types of clothes.

  7. Payless also has a pretty good selection of wide-calf boots.

  8. Womanwithin.com has a reasonable selection of wide calf boots, and you can pretty much always get some sort of coupon from them. I've had good luck with my boots that fit my monster calves. :D

  11. I'm pretty proportionate except for my giant calves (Thanks Mom!) And it sucks because of course the looks I like Skinny Jeans with Boots etc don't work for me. Thanks for the info!
